Compassionate Approaches to Voices and other Experiences

Since January 2016, we have been running a free monthly online (Zoom) supervision group for people working with voice hearers.
We use a peer supervision style where people can share experiences of using voice dialogue and compassion based approaches to help people who hear voices. It is also a space to support each other with this way of working.

About the sessions:

The CAVEtalk peer supervsion sessions are for people in various professional and voluntary capacities who work with people who hear voices or have similar experiences.
Everyone who joins has an interest in compassionate approaches to hearing voices and it is a mutual supervision group where all members are welcome to share reflections and ideas.

The facilitators are mainly there to make it happen.

People are welcome to join a supervision session and then they can decide if they feel it is relevant/useful.

Just a quick overview of how the sessions usually work.

The number of participants vary a lot and we’ve had anything from 1 to 10 people in the past.

The structure of the sessions is that we go around and do a quick check-in and if there are new people we might do brief intro’s of ourselves.

Then we create an agenda with 3-5 items depending on what people bring.

Usually there are at least one or two agenda items that are about a working relationship and people are looking for ideas and support in their work with someone who hears voices or has similar experiences.
Sometimes people share stories about something they have come across recently that they think is interesting and relates to working compassionately with voices. Sometimes the agenda items are more about how to deal with working within systemic structures that are not supportive, and sometimes it is more personal sharing about people’s own experiences relating to their work with voice hearers.

About the facilitators:

CAVEtalk is mainly facilitated by one of its three founding organisers, Elisabeth, Charlie, and Rufus (see bios below). However, from time-to-time, other regular participants of CAVEtalk may help out with the facilitation role. Please note that CAVEtalk is a space that is organised and faciliated voluntarily, with no funding.

Elisabeth Svanholmer has been working with and disseminating the Hearing Voices approach since 2005. She is a keen promoter of using bodywork, voice dialogue and creativity to work with voices and similar intense experiences.

Charlie Heriot-Maitland is a clinical psychologist, researcher, and trainer interested in the application of compassion-focused approaches for people experiencing distress in relation to voices and other experiences.

Rufus May has worked as a clinical psychologist in the NHS since the late nineties. He has been facilitating Hearing voices groups since 2001. He has an interest in voice dialogue, communication skills and mindfulness.
